Thessaloniki, Greece

Under the leadership of Mayor Yannis Boutaris, Thessaloniki, Greece has implemented projects and initiatives around smarter technology and sustainability, including committing to meeting the EU’s target for a 20% reduction in CO2 emissions by 2020 and signing an MOU on Smart Cities with other major Greek Municipalities, Academia and NGO’s. With IBM’s support, the city seeks to become smarter by integrating and leveraging diverse data sources across the fields of environment, mobility, and governance. Using open data, Mayor Boutaris also hopes to improve communications between the city and its citizens to enable greater involvement in local decision making.
