Fresno, United States

2013 challenge

Located in California's Central Valley, Fresno has struggled with economic development and has a higher unemployment rate than the national average. This is due to increasing urban sprawl encroaching on agricultural land, high dropout rates, low college attendance, fragmented water governance, and poor air quality, which contributes to high rates of asthma. The city asked IBM to help it take a data-driven approach to its economic development, which must include ways of analyzing these disparate, yet interconnected, factors. The team's work focused on downtown redevelopment and applying technology to improve agricultural productivity.
