Brussels Capital Region, Belgium

2014 challenge

The Brussels Capital Region experiences some of the worst traffic congestion in Europe, according to the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). The region's rapid population growth, complex governance system over traffic and mobility issues, factors such the availability of many company cars and the varying logistical needs of the numerous international institutions based in Brussels, including NATO and the EU, have posed challenges to addressing this issue effectively. With a desire to include citizens and leverage open data in their response to the region's traffic congestion challenges, Minister of Mobility and Public Works Pascal Smet has asked IBM to recommend ways to improve mobility and collaboration across all modes of transportation and ease congestion in the city.
