Accra, Ghana

2012 challenge

As Accra moves to cement its position as the leading urban hub on the west coast of Africa, its population growth is among the highest on the continent and expected to double within the next 20 years. With this growth comes the challenge of capturing and retaining income from city services. Mayor Alfred Vanderpujie sought IBM’s support developing an integrated revenue collection system to allow the city to deliver services to their growing population more effectively. The team recommended that the city supplement existing revenue collection initiatives through integrating innovative uses of technology such as automated direct payment systems, mobile payment, and Geographical Information System (GIS) technologies.
