Mayor Bell was first elected in November 2001 and is completing his fifth term as Mayor of Durham. He stepped into politics 40 years ago as an elected Durham County Commissioner (1972–1994; 1996– 2000; Chairman - 1982-1994). He wanted to maximize Durham's economy, education and other resources believing that government best serves citizens by partnering with them and the private sector.

Mayor Bell's tenure has included signing the U.S. Conference of Mayors Climate Protection Agreement, adopting the Greenhouse Gas Local Action Plan for Emission Reductions, and leading Durham to be "One of The Best Places To Live, Do Business, Work, and Visit" (New York Times 2011).

Mayor Bell continues to focus on the revitalization of Durham's inner city neighborhoods, downtown revitalization, expansion of green technology, jobs, workforce development/training and transit enhancements.
